Luis Jorge Fontana was born on the 19th April 1846 in Buenos
Aires; he died on the 18th October 1920 in San Juan. He was an
argentine military officer, explorer, geographer, a writer and a politician.
Luis Jorge Fontana was the first governor of the national territory of Chubut
in the country and he is the founder of the city of Formosa.

Jorge Fontana was born in Buenos Aires on the 19th April 1846.
His father was an official in the government regime of Juan
Manuel de Rosas. He entered the Military Command of Rio Negro as a trainer and
he later fought in the Paraguayan War. After the war, he resided in Buenos
Aires and it was there that he studied natural sciences, astronomy and physics
under Hermann Burmeister. He went back to the Army and he was sent on boarder
expedition and he lost his left hand in a violent happenstance with a native
group in the region.
In the year 1879, Jorge Fontana founded the city of Formosa and
he was given the award of the rank of Lieutenant colonel. He went back to
Patagonia and in the year 1881, he was named the governor of the region of
Chubut
He spent his later year 9n San Juan and it was there that he held public
and community offices. He died on the 18th
October 1920.
