Biography
Alberto EvaristoGinastera was born in Buenos Aires to a Catalan father
and an Italian mother. In the last years of his life, he pronounced his surname
in the Catalan pronunciation.
Ginastera studied at the conservatory in Buenos Aires and graduated in
the year 1938. As a young professor, he was a teacher at the LiceoMilitar
General San Martin. After a tour to the USA from the year 1945 to the year
1947, where he studied with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood, he came back to
his country and co-founded the League of music composers. He handled a good
number of teaching posts.
He travelled back to the United States in the year 1968 and then in the
year 1970 he moved to Europe. He died in Geneva, Switzerland at the age of 67
and he was buried in the Cimetiere des Rois in Switzerland. Some of his notable students are; ÁstorPiazzolla,
AlcidesLanza, Waldo de los Ríos, Jacqueline Nova and Rafael Aponte-Ledée.
Ginastera grouped his music into three periods; the first is the
objective nationalism, which is from the year 11934 to the year 1948. The
second being the subjective nationalism, which is from the year 1948 to the
year 1958 and then the third is the Neo nationalism, which is from the year
1958 to the year 1983. Among other unique features, these periods differ in
their use of the traditional elements of the country. The objective
nationalistic works usually add the folk theme of the country in a
straightforward manner, while the works he did in the later period consists of
the traditional element of the country in a high abstract ways.
