Club Career
Abderrahmane Soukane was given the nickname Soukane II. He began his
football career with the junior ranks of JS EL Biar. When he turned 20 years of
age, he joined the French Club, Le Havre AC and played complete 8 seasons with
the club. He assisted the club in getting to the top flight of French football in
the year 1959 as the club won the Division 2 Championship. The club was
relegated after three seasons to the second division. Abderrahmane Soukane was
with the club until the year 1964, when the professional part of the club was
disbanded. In the final season he had with the club, Abderrahmane Soukane
finished as the top goal scorer in the Ligue 2 with the total of 21 goals and
he was the first African man to do that.
In the year 1964, Abderrahmane Soukane joined Toulouse FC after
discussion with long-time FLN teammate Kader Firoud who was publicized to be
the coach of the club. In his first season with the club, they finished 11th
in the 18 team top division. In the second season he had with the club, his
club finished 4th in the standings and that earned the club a UEFA Cup ticket.
He led the club to the semi-final of the Coupe de France, but they lost 2-1 to
RC Strasbourg. Abderrahmane Soukane scored the club’s only goal in the match.
Abderrahmane Soukane played two more seasons with Toulouse FC and at the
end of the year 1967; Abderrahmane Soukane left the club after the disbandment
of the professional part of the club. Abderrahmane Soukane played a season with
Red Star 93 before he retired from active football.
International Career
Abderrahmane Soukane together with his brother Mohamed were members of
the Algerian FLN team that fought for the independence of the country from
France. He played in tours and friendly matches around the world.
