Youssef Kohzad was
born in the year 1935. He is an ethnic Tajik of Afghanistan; he is a writer, a
painter, playwriter, artist and actor, a poet and an art consultant. He
currently stays in Tracy, California in the U.S. since he left his country. He
is married to Zakia Kohzad.
Background
Youssef Kohzad was
born in the year 1935 in the Chendawol region of Kabul in Afghanistan. At the
time of his high school, he wrote plays for the Kabul Theater and fashioned
some artworks for the Kabul Theatre. Kohzad finished from the Nejat High School
in Kabul in the year 1953. He finished his formal education from the Academy of
Art in Rome, Italy in the year 1965. When he came back from Italy, he travelled
to the former Soviet Union in India and the former Eastern Germany to show his
art together with some other modern Afghan artists. Many of his works are
exhibited in the Middle Eastern Studies museum that is located in Moscow.
From the year 1966 to
1969, Youssef held an executive position at the ministry of Media and culture
and then hi was the head of department of Fine Arts.
In the year 1971, he
was made the art consultant of the Theatre in Kabul. He wrote eaight dramas and
all of them were performed on the stage. In several of the plays, he acted the
major role.
In the year 1975 he
came back to the ministry of Media and Culture and held the post of the
President of the ministry till the year 1992.
In the year 1976, he
founded the National Gallery in Kabul and this included the 700 paintings and
some other works that can be traced back to a hundred years. Unfortunately, out
of the 700 works of art, just 30 can be seen today.
From the year 1992 to
2000, Youssef was a refugee together with his family and was forced to leave
India. In August 2000, he relocated to the United States and has been staying
there in the Northern California. His first art show in the United States was
held in Palo Alto in August 2001.
