Rico is possibly the single biggest center for production of reggaeton. The
origins of the reggaeton lie in the 80s, reggae en espanol of the Panamanian
musician El General and certain songs by Puerto Rican rapper known as Vico C. At
the early 90s, reggaeton merged as a more conclusive genre, using the Dem Bow
riddim originate from a Shabba Ranks song by that name, and further similar to
Jamaican dancehall in its verse sung in simple tunes and stentorian pattern and
its stress via videos, lyrics and musician personas on partying, dancing,
boasting, bling and sexuality rather than heavy social comment. While reggaeton
may have started as a Spanish-dialect version of Jamaica dancehall, in the
hands of artists like Tego Calderon, don Omar and daddy Yankee and others. It
soon got its own unique flavor and presently might be considered as the very
renowned dance music in the Spanish Caribbean, outstanding even salsa.
