The
kobazri hosted them into area expert guild-like structure, which is known as
the Kobazr Guild.
During
the Soviet Union period most of the folk kobazri were killed, the majority
perishing during the Stalin’s purge during in the 1930s. Even the instruments
such as bandura and kobaz, were restricted and confiscated. The practice of the
Ukrainian ethnocide that remained after the decline of the Russian territory,
and under the encouragement of the noted folk bandurist Heorhiy Tkachenko a
Kobazr Guild was re-created in the year 1991 in Kiev by Mykola Budnyk in order
to restore and foster the olden kobazr customs. The Guild unites many
singer-artists in Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora. Many of its members were
not formally Conservatory educated.
