Jazz
is one of the instruments that were imported to Romania as early as the
interwar era, though; jazz music was restricted after the World War II, with
the advent of the communist administration. The prohibition dropped in the year
1964.

It
is was popularized by Cornel Chiriac, jazz artists such as Richard Oschanitzky,
Janos Korossy, and Eugen Ciceu assisted develop the genre in Romania, it was
formerly popularized alongside with easy music. Vocalist Aura Urziceanu has
performed at New York in the year 1972 and toured widely under the name Aura
Rully.
Though
controlled, jazz after the year 1989 still it has cult following, with a series
of festivals such as Garana international Jazz Festival. Current jazzmen in
Romania include Harry Tavitian, Johnny Raducanu, Mihai lordache, Vlaicu Golcea,
Lucian Ban and many others. In the present years a few ensembles have appeared
which make the use of elements of ni-jazz, tr[-hop and electronic music:
Norzeatic & Khidja, Aievea and others.
