The hyōshigi is a
simple Japanese musical instrument that is made up of two piece of hardwood or
bamboo, which is connected by a thin decorative rope. The musical instrument is
used in the traditional theaters in the country to announce the starting of a
performance. The clappers are played together or on the floor to manufacture a
cracking sound. The instruments are struck, slowly at the first times and then
faster and faster.
