In
the time of the colonial period Senegal was colonized by France and other
countries, though not all, Senegalese are recognized as French instead of any
African culture. The Post-independence, the philosophy of assertion of black
identity emerged, which adopted the idea that the griot customs of Senegal were
as valid, classical and meaningful as French classical music.
The
first Senegal President known as Leopold Sedar Senghor (also a poet) was one of
the main advocates of this. The national anthem of Senegal which is known as Pincez tous vos korasm frappez les balafons
(Pluck all your koras, strike your balafons) which was adopted in the year
1960. It words, by president Senghor, means to the Malian music custom, while the
music was composed by Hebert Pepper.
