The
very well-known type of Romanain traditional music is known as the doina. There
are other patterns of traditional music. It includes the bocet (lament), cantec
batranesc (folk epic ballads; literally song of the elders) and the cand cibanu
si-a pierdut oile (meaning when the shepherd has lost the sheep).

Diona
is poetic and frequently sad; sometime it is compared with blues for that
reason. Doinas are frequently played with a slow, free rhythm song against a
fast accompaniment method in stable tempo, giving an overall feeling of
rhythmic tension. Some of the melodies are sometime recited in diverse
melodies, and usually follow a descending method.
Some
of the local patterns of doina include Ca pe lunca (which was initiated along
the southern Danube), Oltului (which was initiated along the River Olt), De
Codru codru (which means forest), Klezmer (which was initially played by Jewish
artists from Bessarabia and Moldavia and Hora lunga, which means long dance,
from the area of Maramures, and Transylvania.
Others
patterns of doina include Ca din tulnic (distinctive form in which the song
copies a form of bugle known as tulnic, Foaje verde (it is classical type;
literally mean green leaves), De pahar (drinking song; pahar refers to as
drinking glass), De jale (mellow, mournful doina: jale refers to as grief), De
dragoste (renowned type, usually about love; dradoste refers to as love),
Ciobanul (shepherd’s diona) and De leagan (a lullaby; leagan refers to as
cradle).
