During
the post-colonial era, Rwanda produced renowned indigenous ensembles like
Imena, Les 8 Anges, Nyampinga, Les fellows, Los Compagnons de la Chanson,
Impala, Bisa, Abamarungu, Isibo y’Ishakwe, and Ingenz. They took effects from
throughout Africa, particularly the Congo, as well as Caribbean zouk and
reggae. The socio-military unrest and crisis led many Rwandans to travel to
overseas in the late 20th century, bringing their country’s music to
towns like Paris and Brussels. For many periods, Rwandan-Belgian known as
Cecile Kayirebwa was questionably the very internationally popular Rwandan
artists, until the late 90s advent of Rwandan-Canadian Corneille and Jean-Paul
Samputu.

The
Rwandan killing in the meantime disrupted music production within Rwandan. In
the present years music has increasingly coming back to the country, led by
Rwandan youth. A crop of current artists has appeared which include Mani
Martin, King James, Miss Shanel, Dream Boys, Riderman, Kitoko, Knowles,
Kamichi, Tom Close, Aime Murefu, Urban Boyz and Miss Jojo.
