Iron
ensembles were brought to Saint Kitts and Nevis Carnivals in the 40s, when the
ensembles used makeshift drumming instruments from the likes of car rims. Bands
of indigenous, cooperative artists created during this period, playing drums,
bass guitars, saxophones and trumpets; these includes the Silver Rhythm
Orchestra, Music Makers, brown Queen, Rhythm Kings and Esperanza. The coming
year saw the beginning of Trinidadian pattern known as steelpan, introduced by
Lloyd Matheson, C.B.E and also an education officer.
The
initial steelpan ensemble was Roy Martin’s Wilberforce Steel Pan. Other
ensembles include the Eagle Squadron, The Invaders, Boston Tigers, Boomerang
and Casablanca. Current carnival in Saint Kitts and Nevis did not start until
the late 50s. During the 60s, brass ensemble led the first carnival, then much
of renowned music.
