The
renowned songstress Salawa abeni had become nationally famous after the release
of Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed in 1967, which was the first recording
done by Nigeria woman to sell more than a million copies. In the 1980s, she
became one of the nation’s best-selling musicians, making her own sole
collection of music known as waka; she was so closely related with the genre
that a royal personality as Alaafin of Oyo, Obalamidi Adeyemi gave her the
Queen of Waka music in the year 1992. Waka was a combination of juju, fuji and
traditional Yoruba music. Waka music is coming back into the modern age with a
fresh musician like Tila Man Timi Korus and Dollar billz bringing back the old
school into the new school.
