The
Nigerien rap is a mélange of diverse languages spoken in Niger, emerged at the
end of the 1990s. The music is peaceful and smooth, combined with the sounds of
traditional musical patterns from numerous ethnicities in the country. It rose
into an interesting sociologic event, increasing what was expected of domestic renowned
entertainment. The young and dissatisfied have used the rap Nigerien to give
voice to famous complaints like forced marriages, corruption, child labor,
poverty and other issues.

Rap
Nigerien also impulsively emerged in UNICEF grassroots cultural programs, which
is one of the few outlets for the huge scale performance in the country. In
August 2004, UNICEF launched the contest known as scene Ouverte rap; where 45
news orchestras were picked from among an over 300 candidates. The contest
performances took place at the Centre Culturel Franco in Nigerien between the 5th
and 14th of August 2004.
A
huge number of Rap Nigerien act rose out of this scene and remain active, with
the popular being known as Awn, Kaidan Gaskya, Tchakey, Djoro G and Wass Wong.
Upcoming groups such as kamikaze, Haskey Klan, Metaphor and Rass Idris have
since emerged.
