Many
Dutch groups have played a majority role in the building of rap and hip hop in
Netherlands. The Urban Dance Squad which was led by Rude Boy who later played
with Junkie XL created an initial mix of rock and rap putting the basis for the
new metal hype of the late 90s and early 2000s. Def La Desh and Fresh Witness
which was led by Wendy Wright brought the rap with the vocals to the lead, with
groups like TLC. Osdorp Posse who was the initiator of Dutch rap or nederhop
and their headman known as Def P (Pascal Griffioen) changed from English to
Dutch in 1988 which made him as one of the first to frap in Dutch commercially.
Seda, King, Def P and Ijsblok in that year established Osdorp Posse.

As time
went on they explored all areas of hip hop from poetic hip pop to political
engaged hip pop. They brought several Anglicism in the Dutch dialect such as
moederneuker (meaning motherfucker). But before Osdorp Posse, Rotterdam-based
rapper Def Rhymz and other members of the Bad Boy Posse are already using the
Dutch dialect for raps during underground shows. Other prominent Dutch rappers
include Pete Philly & Perquisite, The Opposites, Extince (Peter Kops),
Kempi Brainpower (Gert-Jan Mulder), Polderkartel, Opgezwolle, Typhoon (rapper),
Spookrijders and Def Rhymz (Dennis Bouman) and currently Nicolay is one of the
leading hip hop producers that came from the country.
