The
steel band custom is common to many Caribbean especially Lesser Antillean
Islands. The Montserratian custom began in the year 1949 in Ryner’s Village and
Kinsale and was popular through the following year to be played at the Empire
Day celebrations. In spite of the criticism about the music, it was humiliating
for children and later steel band became popular as major part of the island
musical heritage.

Calypso
is an initially Trinidadian style of music that has its wide spread over the
entire world. In the present years it has become the main part of Montserratian
music that emerges from Alponosus Arrow Cassell, a soca musician who is
internationally well-known. Calypso in Montserrat dates back to 1950s and
Justin Hero Cassell (Arrow’s brother) who won the island calypso contest
thirteen times and he became the king of calypso in organization of Eastern
Caribbean States. Sylvina Khandhje Malone became the first female calyspso
monarch on Montserrat in 2000.
