Many
of the Dutch musicians have become renowned by singing songs in their own
language. This began with Peter Kolewijin in the late 1950s, who was the first
to sing the rock and roll in Dutch. In the 60s, it was primarily Boudewijin de
Groot that is now very popular. In the 70s there were many artists of which Rob
de Nijis became successful. The 80s include Koos Alberts and Andres Hazes. In
the 1990s, Macro Borsato was dominated and other renowned names throughout the
years include Frans Bauer, Gordon, Jan Smit, Gerard Joling, Guus Meeuwis and
Rene Froger. Another prominent Dutch band is known as Tambourine.

In
addition, there are many large groups of bands that compose and perform the pop
and rock songs in Dutch language. It began in the 1970s with Polle Eduard, Bots
and Normaal which sang in the vernacular. In the late 70s and early 80s there were
a big number of bands that used the Dutch language in their songs. Popular
representatives from that period include Het Goede Doel, Toontje Lager, Frank
Boeijen and Doe Maar and during the late 80s include Trockener Kecks, The Scene
and De Dijik. In the 90s there was a second successful Acda en de Munnik, IOS
and Van Dik Hout.
