Norway
is a thinly populated country in Europe with 5 million populations in an area
of some 685,000 km2 (264,480sq mi), but even then their music and
its musical life are as difficult as those of most other countries. Much has
been heard about the early music of Norway from the physical artifacts seen
during the archaeological lodgings. These include such instruments such as the
lur. Viking and medieval sagas also define musical activity, as do the accounts
of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf’s grave in
Trondheim.

In
the later part of the 19th century Norway experienced economic
growth leading to industrialization and urbanization. More music was built in
the cities and opera performances and symphony shows were considered to be high
standards. In this period both popular composer like Edyard Grieg and Johan
Syendsen and artists mixed the European customs with Norwegian tones.
The
import of music and artists of dance and entertainment increased and this
continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records
and radio became popular. In the last half of the 20th century,
Norway unlike many other countries in the world underwent a roots renewal that
saw local music being revitalized.
