The Harana and Kundiman are two lyrical songs that are renowned in the Philippine Islands which was traced back from the Spanish era. Harana are traditional courtship songs in the Mexican-Spanish custom based on the habanera rhythm while the Kundiman has pre-colonial roots from the Tagalog area, uses triple tempo rhythm. Kundiman is also unique by a minor key at the starting and shifts to a major key in the second half. Its lyrics portray a romantic theme, normally portraying love, sadness or passion.

During the 20s the Harana and Kundiman became more normal musical patterns led by artists such as Atang de la Rama, Conching Rosal, Jovita Fuentes, Ruben Tagalog and Sylvia La Torre.
