Montserrat’s
traditional musical heritage includes a large collection of religious and
ritual; folk music. There is also folk music that is used in the spiritual
musical customs in addition to secular use. Indeed there are is still a little
different between secular and spiritual parts of traditional Montserratian
culture. Folk songs generally in Montserrat are Creole language and it concern
topic ranging from obeah (meaning magic) to agriculture, infidelity and
historic occurrences. Many of the songs are extensive and popular and occur in
many changes including Nincom Riley and All de Relief, which are the two most
renowned Montserratian folk songs. The folk collection also includes calypso
and the Irish melodies. The Irish Montserratian custom has widely died out with
the last artist George Allen, a fiddler die in 1966.
