The
introduction of the western classical music to Egypt took off in the 19th
century with instruments like the piano and violin that gradually been adopted
by the Egyptians. Also, opera became increasingly famous during this era, and
Giuseppe Verdi’s Egyptian-themed Aida which was also premiered in Cairo in
December 24, 1871.

In
the early 20th century, the first generation of the Egyptian singers
such as Yusef Greiss, Abu Bakr Khairat, and Hassan Rashid, start writing for
the western instruments, the second generation of the Egyptian singers include
famous artists such as Gamal Abdelrahim. A representative singers of the third
generation are Ahmed El- Saedi and Rageh Daoud, in the early 21 century, during
the fourth generation the singer, Mohammed Abdelwahab Abdelfattah of the Cairo
Conservatory have gained international audience.
