The
rara music is a Lenten processional music with strong ties to the Vodou local
traditions. This has been generally confused with Haitian Carnival since the
celebration of the both the large groups of dancing in the streets. Rara is
performed between Ash Wednesday (the day after Carnival ends) until Easter
Sunday (or the Easter Monday in some part of Haiti). Rara groups roam the
streets performing religious events as part of their ritual duties to the Iwa
or spirits of Haitian Voodoo. Guede, a spirit associated with death and sexuality,
is a significant spiritual presence in Rara festivities and often possesses a
hougan (male Voodoo priest) or mambo (female Voodoo priest) before the band
starts its procession in order to bless the members and wish them safe travels
for their nightly rests.
