The
first half of the 20th century saw a series of famous Guyanese dance
bands, which include the BG Musicians Bands, Harry Banks Orchestra, Bert Rogers
& His Aristocrats Dance Orchestra, Al Seals and Mr. Gouveia’s Orchestra.
By
the 1960s, these big bands with prominent Gorns, woodwinds and other
instruments became less famous in favour of a wave of cord bands. They includes
the Telstars, Mischievous Guys, Cannonballs, Combo 7, Rhythmaires, Bing Serrao
& the Ramblers, Curtis MG’s, Sid & the Slickers, Bumble & the
Saints, Donimators, Little Jones, Yoruba Singers and Rudy & the Roosters.
The
rockets that is led by Michael Bacchus and lead singer Johnny Braff along with
Bumble & the Saints, led by Colin Wharton was possibly the most powerful orchestra
in this shift. During the end of the era, new instruments like box guitars
(brought by Bing Serrao & the Ramblers) had taken over, while heavy guitar
work by the Rhythmaires and Combo 7’s complex drum solos proved powerful.
Other
bands of the 1960s and 1970s were the Cannonballs, Little Jones, Curtis MG’s,
Dominators, Rudy, Mischievous Guy, Roosters, Sid and the Slickers, Telstars,
Yoruba Singer and the Rhythmaires.
