In
the colonial Hong Kong, pipa was one of the instruments played by the Chinese
and it was mainly used for festivities purposes. The western classical music
was on the other hand, the principal focus amongst British Hong Kongers with
the Sino group being initiated in the year 1895. In the beginning of the 20th
century, the western pop music became famous. Mandarin pop songs in the 1920s
were known as the Si Doi Kuk. They are measures in the prototype of the Chinese
pop songs.
In
the year 1949 the People Republic of China was founded by the communist party.
One of the first actions taken by the government was to denounce the famous
music as pornography. In the beginning of the1950s a massive wave of settlers
fled from Shanghai to Hong Kong. Along with it was the Pathe Records (Hong Kong)
record company, which ended up becoming one of the most important well-known
record companies in Hong Kong.
The
1960s remarked the rise of the Hong Kong English pop that peaked until the
mid-1970s among the British and the Upper Middle/Upper class ethnic Chinese
Hong Kongers. And after the Chinese language had become an official language in
the year 1974. Cantopop’s fame increased sharply due to the better status of
the language and the large Cantonese Chinese populace. The traditional Chinese
Huangmei opera, on the other hand, had peaked in the 1960s amongst the general
Chinese populace.
