Drawing
on the rebetiko westernizing by Tsitsanis and Chiotis, Entekhno appears in the
later 1950s. entekhno (literally meaning is art song) is orchestral music with
elements from Greek traditional rhythm and melody; its lyrical themes are often
based on the work of the popular Greek poets. As opposed to other ways of Greek
urban traditional music, entekhno shows would often take place outside a hall
or a night club in the open area. Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis were
the most well-known early singers of entekhno song cycles. Other important
Greek songwriters include Manos Liozos, Dimos Moutsis and Stavros Kouyoumtzis.
By the 1960s, creative albums helped entekhno to become close to the normal,
and also led to its adoption by the film industry for use in soundtracks. A
form of entekhno which is even closer to western classical music was initiated
during the late 1970s and 1980s by Thanos Mikroutsikos, also other popular trend
information of Neokyma and current entekhno.
