It
was through the lonian islands, which were under Venetain rule and influence,
that all the major advances of the western European classical music were
familiarized to mainland Greeks. The place is notable for the birth of the
first School of present Greek classical music (lonian or Heptanesean School), which
was established in the year 1815. Prominent respresentatives of this genre
include Spyridon Samaras, Dionysius Rodotheatos, Pavlos Carrer, Nikolaos
Mantzaros and Spyridon Xyndas. The church music (Byzantine) of the islands is
also different form the rest of the Greece, with a lot of western and Catholic influences
on the Orthodox rite.
