The significance of the drum in Garifuna music is another similarity to
their African influence, the Garifuna songs depend heavily on percuss and in
several instances their music is uttered by it. It is normal that a particular
drum pattern will call for two percussions (which except for the scared music,
which usually uses three). One of the drummers will play a fixed, consistent
way. This drummer is usually known as the Segundo player.

Another more intricate part made up of the cross way is normally played
by the primero player, percussions of the Garifuna are usually made of
hardwoods that are uniformly shaped and carved
out in the centres.
At the end of the drums, be it one or two they are covered with the
skins from the peccary, sheep, deer. These drums are played with the hand, and
some of the percussion have been called to wrap metal wires around the
drumheads to give them a snare-like sound. Some of the musicians join the drums
with gourd shakers known as sisira, and also the instruments such as the
guitar, flute, and violin have been adopted from early French, English, and
Spanish tradition music, as well as Jamaican and also the Haitian
Afro-Caribbean patterns.
