The pandeiro is a kind of frame drum
that is popular in Brazil. The instrument has been explained to be an
unofficial instrument of the country. The drum head is tunable and the rim
holds metal jingle which are formed to be in a cup-shape creating a crisper,
drier and less sustained tone on the pandeiro more than the tambourine. This
musical instrument is held in one hand and struck on the head by the other hand
to produce the sound needed. Exact pandeiro styles are played by interchanging the
thumb, fingertips, heel and the palm of the hand. When shaken, the instrument
can produce sound and the player can run a finger along the head of the
instrument to produce a roll. In Brazilian folk music such as the samba, choro,
coco and capoeira, the pandeiro makes much impact.

The term pandeiro was formally used
to describe a square double-skinned frame drum usually with a bell inside it. A
musical instrument such as this is known by the term “adufe” in Spain and
Portugal. It is extracted from an earlier Arabic instrument that can still be
found in Africa. Pandeiro is still used in parts of Galicia and Portugal to
explain the square-shape drum while the round drum with jingles is called
pandeiro in Galicia.
