The gogona is a kind of jaw harp. The
gogona is a vibrating reed musical instrument that is used mainly in the
traditional Bihu music in Assam. The musical instrument is produced out of a
piece of bamboo or horn that has a bifurcation on one extreme. The solid
extreme of the instrument is gripped with the teeth and the free extremes of
the instrument are then struck continuously with the fingers of the hand to
emit the unique sound of the instrument.

There are basically two types of the
gogona; the Ramdhan and the Lahori gogona. The ramdhan gogona is performed
commonly by male. This version of the musical instrument is slightly heavier,
shorter and wider than the Lahori gogona to hold very well in the hands of a
male. This musical instrument is fudge kept performer’s waist tied tongali or
head tied gamusa as other musical instruments, such as Bahi, Xutuli, etc. The Lahori
gogona is produced to fit the female hand, this version of the musical
instrument is slightly slimmer and longer than the ramdhan version of the
musical instrument. This version of the musical instrument uses a hair pin of
hair knot, while the instrument is playing Bihu dance.
