The garifuna drum is a membranophone percussion instrument from the Garifuna culture in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. The drums perform a very crucial role in the garifuna music. There are two types of the garifuna drums used, the ‘primero’, which is the tenor drum and the ‘segunda’, which is the bass drum. These musical drums are produced of hollowed out hard wood like the mahogany or the mayflower, but other woods can also be used in the production of the musical instrument. This percussion has one drumhead that is made from the skin of peccary pig, deer or the sheep. The musical instruments are performed by raw hands and are often played while seated.
