The garifuna drum is a membranophone percussion
instrument that came from the Garifuna culture in belize, Guatemala and
Honduras. This musical instrument has played a crucial role in garifuna music.
This drum is of two types; “primero” that is the tenor drum and “sedunda” the
bass drum. These drums are carved out of hallowed hard wood like the mahogany
or mayflower although some other wood can be used. This percussion instrument
has one drumhead of sking that came from peccary pig, deer or from sheep. The
garifuna drum can be played using bare hands and are often played while seating
