The ekkalam is an aerophone musical instrument that is mainly used in Tamil Nadu, India. The musical instrument is made up of a large brass tube, having a bell on one of the ends. This musical instrument manufactures sound by vibration of air that is injected by the player of the musical instrument, changing the pitch by altering the lip tension and the power of air flow in the musical instrument. The ekkalam is played in temple festivals or ceremonies. Several sounds manufactured by this musical instrument travel straight outward from the bell on the instrument. The musical instrument is played together with a drum or another ekkalam.
