In shehnai ensembles, the player of
this musical instrument provided the rhythm accompaniment, but in the modern
days, the player of a tab la has the function of providing the rhythm
accompaniment. The instrument’s part in those ensembles is made up of two
drums, like a tabla and the beyan, though smaller in size. The musical
instrument has neither the resounding characteristic of the tabla nor the
distinctiveness that the tabla has of nourishing the frequencies of a note.
The musical instrument is also played
in baul music of the Bengal/ Bangladesh region.
