The cobza is different from the
Ukrainian kobza, a musical instrument of different construction and origin.
Romanian and Moldovan folk.
The Romanian version of the musical
instrument is a metal-strung and has a very short neck with no frets, with a
bent-back pegbox. The back of the instrument is ribbed. It is often double or
triple strung and usually has a characteristic claps and flat.
The musical instrument is performed
with the use of plectrum in elaborate
and florid melodic passagework. The instrument has a pick-guard analogous to
that of an oud. The strings of the cobza are widely spaced at the bridge to
facilitate this pattern. The instrument has a soft tone, most often tuned to
D-A-D-G.
The origin of the Romanian cobza are
assumed to be a local adaptation of the Persian barbat or the Turkish oud,
perhaps brought to the area by itinerant gypsy musicians in the 15th
century. The player of the musical instrument is known as ‘Cobzar’.
The Romanian-Hungarian cobza was also
performed by Ukrainian musicians in different music ensembles in the Bukovvna
region in the mid war phase, being substituted totally by the mandolin and the
4 stringed domra when this area became added into the Ukrainian SSR. The name
of this musical instrument came from the Turkic ‘kopuz’.
