The
Carnatic music (which is also known as Sanskrit: Karnataka samgita) is a type
of music commonly associated within the Southern part of India subcontinent, a
place roughly confined to be four presence states in India as; the Anlhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and the Tamil Nadu. This is one of the two major sub
genres of the India classical music that evolved from generation of Hindu
cultures, the other sub-genre being Hindustani music, which appeared as a
different form because of Persian and Islamic influences in North India. In
different to Hindustani music, the major emphasis in Carnatic music is on the
vocal music, most compositions are written to be sung, and if played on the
instruments, they are meant to be performed in gayaki (singing) style.

Meanwhile,
there are stylistic differences, the basic elements of the sruti (the relative
musical pitch), swara (which is the musical sound of a single note), raga
(which is the mode or melodic method), and tala (which is the rhythmic cycles)
make the foundation of improvisation and composition on both the Carnatic and
Hindustani music, while improvisation plays a significant role. The Carnatic
music is mostly sung through compositions, especially the kriti (or kitanam)
which is a form developed between the 14th and 20th
century by the composers which include the Purandara Dasa and the Trinity of
Carnatic music. The Carnatic music is also usually taught and learnt through
the compositions.
The
Carnatic music is commonly performed by a small ensemble of musicians,
consisting of a principal performer (which is usually the vocalist), a melodic
accompaniment (which is usually the violin), rhythm accompaniment (which is the
mridangam), and a tambura, that perform as a drone throughout the performance.
Other typical instruments used in performances include the ghatam, kanjira,
morsing, venu flute, veena, and chitraveena. The main outstanding performances
and the greatest concentration of Cranatic musicians are seen in the city of
Chennai. Different festivals are held throughout India and abroad, mainly
comprising of Carnatic music performances such as the Madras music season, now
known as one of the world’s biggest cultural events.
