The bara is a spherical hand drum
that has a body produced from a dried gourd or calabash, used in the western
part of Africa. The single head of the instrument is produced of goatskin. The
manufacture the musical drum, a dried gourd is cut on one extreme and a single
head made out of goat skin is stretched over the opening. The bara musical drum
can come in many sizes, some are quite large and some are smaller. The musical
instrument is commonly used to accompany the balafon.
The bara has been used in the music performances
of the Malian musicians Yaya Diallo and Habib Koite.
