History of Music in Guatemala

The Guatemala is a country with diverse music settings and it can easily be noticed that music are played all over the country – down to the local places. Towns also have wine and drumming bands-week processions, as well as on other events. The Garifuna people of Afro-Caribbean descent, who are thinly spread across the Caribbean region, have their own different varieties of famous and traditional music. Cumbia, from the Colombian variety, is also very well-known. Dozens of rock bands have arose in the last years, making rock music quite famous among young people.

Guatemala also has an almost five-century old tradition of art music, spanning from the first liturgical chant and polyphony founded in the year 1524 to current art music. Much of the music composed in Guatemala dates back from the 16^th century to the 19^th century and has also been presently unearthed by performers.
